Vertical Landscapes offers a fascinating review of Canadian piano music composed within four decades from the 1980s (Alexina Louie’s Music for Piano) to the 2020s (the most recent piece in the collection being Terri Hron’s Memories of Trees). The CD is titled after the two-movement cycle by the distinguished composer and pedagogue, Joan Hansen (1941-2021).
The theme of this CD is dedicated to Canadian women in music. Canadian history is reflected in a deep admiration and respect for the nature. There is a celebration of natural elements which creates strength, understanding and positive human connections...this makes a huge impact on composers. They feel a great connection with the nature, space and stars. I was exploring those emotions and I made a list of compositions which you can find on this CD.
I have chosen compositions from different provinces across Canada. The selections were made based on the database of the CMC. Each composition has a unique story and the composers came from different backgrounds, unified under a strong artistic integrity.
The other works appearing on the CD are by Maria Thompson Corley, Christine Donkin, Kristin Flores, Alice Ping Yee Ho, Melissa Hui, Linda Caitlin Smith, Ana Sokolović, and Karen Sunabacka.
With Vertical Landscapes takes you on a unique journey, which is as aesthetically satisfying as it is emotionally fulfilling.

“Growing up in the Czech Republic, you are consciously or unconsciously surrounded by the music of Luboš Fišer…his compositions found their way into all spheres of the cultural life here.Upon discovering Fišer’s Piano Sonata No. V, during my conservatory years, the music immediately resonated with me and I felt as though I was beginning a conversation with a long-lost friend. His music sparks my imagination and I feel privileged to welcome listeners into this enchanting musical thriller.”
